Drug Court Propaganda
Even though I do not doubt that Drug Court has helped people, there numbers of effectiveness are slanted. In part there is a boat load of money for these programs. The Drug Courts need and want to be seen in the most positive light so the programs will continue and the money keep flowing. Many participants that are in a Drug Court program are in much longer than if they would of just went to jail in the first place. Sometimes they would of just got probation!
Also most-not all,are big time AA believers. They are breaking the laws right and left by mandating AA.They continue to do it in a blatant abuse of power. As of earlier this year the National Drug Court Association had no position on mandating AA. How could this be? They should be recommending to the Drug Courts to offer alternatives and also to initiate their own meetings for their own participants.
The fact that many Drug Courts are still mandating minors to 12 step meetings along side violent criminals and sex offenders makes my blood boil.

Re: Drug Court program are in much longer
Yep. Totally true. Often times it is better to just do your time, especially if you don't have a good job to lose. But if you can keep a charge off your record, that might be a strong motivation.

I was not sent by a court.
I was not sent by a court. It has been many years since I've been in trouble with the law. I went to rehab on my own accord, which is where I was introduced to AA. I went to rehab because I was really, really sick. My liver was all fucked up, but thankfully I don't have cirrhosis. I also had a rip in my esophagus from drinking and puking so much. I started puking blood and finally went in. My liver values are normal now, but I would probably have died within 15 years had I kept going. Possibly sooner.

Witholding Adjudication
Well Judges withold adjudication on cases all the time, not just in Drug Courts.
It is tempting though for these participants, and that is how they are sucked into
it in the first place. People do not realize how many participants are kicked out of the program, and how many are thrown in jail when they have violations. Many times they end up doing more jail time than if they just had a straight sentence. When Drug Courts like to say they are keeping people out of jail,in many respects they are clogging the jails!

I am of the opinion that, generally speaking, I would rather go to prison than do drug court.

Going to prison
That is the choice many have to make. But it is a very difficult program going through Drug Court.
I am a healthy non-addicted person, and I would find it difficult to jump through the hoops they ask these people to do. On top of going to AA up to 5 times a week, they have to meet the probation officer, show up to court to talk with the judge,go to other therapy and take urine tests. Plus they are expected to find a job.
It does not matter if it is a single mom with 2 kids and no car or no drivers license. A ton of burden is put on the person's family financially and driving them around. That is why you see more whites in some Drug Courts. Because many of the lowest income families in bad neighborhoods dont have the support system. But in regular court they will still mandate AA,they just dont get the chance as much to not keep it on their record.

People have an understandable
People have an understandable desire to avoid jail. But I think you have to ask whether there is a realistic chance that the guy is going to be able to successfully do drug court. Ultimately it is his choice, but in most circumstances I think it only prolongs the inevitable. All too many of these defendants end up serving longer sentences under the "installment plan." And as you indicated, not many people get the maximum (or close to it) sentence anyway. In my opinion, one should look for the quickest way out of the system, even if it involves more jail time in the short term.

live free- OKAY I just read
live free- OKAY I just read th eDrug Court thing for about an HOur! HOLY FUCKING SHIT what is wrong with this country. Prohibition here we come.
What's wrong with teaching moderation. Kenneth ANderson needs a PR Team.
I wrote an email to the head of the drug court in CALI but it bounced back to me. I'll try again tomorrow.
This is very good stuff. Its a very important part of the component. AA surely needs to become smaller and safer. Smart, SOS , WFS and the others need to get larger.
Pot needs to be not in the category as cocaine. Drug Court , Sober Living, Rehab, DUI's are a big business with a lousy answer.
Again, Pennywise, Anti D and Live free. Great blogging! I have been swamped getting ready for a move in mid JAN but there is so much to do.
I think in JUNE there is a huge annual Drug Court Conference. Maybe we can meet up there and make some headway.
