Rev. Ward Ewing, Class A (nonalcoholic) Trustee and Chairperson of the General Service Board of A.A. says that A.A. is the only way to achieve long term sobriety. Speaking at A.A.'s 2012 Pacific Regional Forum, Rev. Ewing stated the following:
"The spiritual program of A.A. is the only program that provides long-term sobriety." and
"We have a powerful spiritual program that works - the only program that truly works for long-term sobriety." and
"This is the only way that has ever worked effectively over the long term."
Document available at: http://www.aa.org/lang/en/en_pdfs/en_rf_finalrep_sept14-16-12.pdf
One would expect that the Chairperson of the General Service Board of A.A. would be well educated and informed about alcoholism and recovery from alcoholism but obviously that isn't so. Rev. Ewing is completely unaware of i) Natural recovery from alcoholism, ii) Medically assisted recovery from alcoholism, iii) Secular Organizations for Sobriety, iv) SMART Recovery, v) Rational Recovery, vi) Women for Sobriety, etc., etc. How can such profound ignorance exist at the very highest levels in A.A?
Rev. Ewing displays his own, and A.A.'s, hypocrisy by stating that A.A. is the only program that provides long-term sobriety. A.A. literature clearly states the following:
“A.A. has never been advanced as the only answer to the problem…” - F.A.Q. About A.A.
"We do not think we are the only people who have the answer to problem drinking." - This is A.A.
"Upon therapy for the alcoholic himself, we surely have no monopoly." - Big Book, Foreword 2nd Ed.
and Bill Wilson’s 1944 declaration that: “The roads to recovery are many.”
Rev. Ewing's ignorance and hypocrisy shouldn't be surprising - we've already seen this displayed by Phyllis Halliday, General Manager of A.A’s GSO and President of AAWS, Inc. When addressing A.A.’s 16th European Service Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, October 23, 2011 she stated:
“One thing is certain, there would be no hope for any alcoholic anywhere if the collective pulse of this lifesaving spiritual fellowship were not lighting the way with love and trust.” - http://www.orange-papers.org/forum/node/2830
Rev. Ewing and Phyllis Halliday (the two most senior officers in A.A.) have shown themselves to be completely ignorant and uniformed by passing on medical misinformation to A.A. members and the public. They have also shown themselves to be completely hypocritical by stating that A.A. is the only way to recover from alcoholism.

Ah yes, me too.
I must be having flashbacks and hallucinating that I've stayed sober for so long. Rev. Ewing says that is impossible. Oh well, better luck in the next lifetime.
