In this article by Stanton Peele, the author blasts the ridiculousness of trying to get college kids to sign on for a lifetime of sobriety under age 21: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/addiction-in-society/201108/invasion...

And even younger
This was a recent post on the 12-step-free forum. The first part is a joke about someone sending their dog to AlaPet, but the Alatot bit seems real - 6 to 12 year olds FFS - isn't that child abuse?
"...not only do her children to Al Anon and Al Ateen, but her dog goes to Ala Pet. I thought she was joking, she wasn't."
" Haw haw. Funny. But there really IS such a thing as *Alatot* It's not everywhere, like Alanon and Alateen (although it does fall under the umbrella of Alanon), but it does exist in some places. I do believe it's for kids from six up, and at 12 they graduate into Alateen. Jeez, little kids learning how Powerless they are....
God damn it, get me a whiskey

That is a great read by Stanton Peele. As expected, the steppers ignored real science and data and quoted either the big book or just made up reasons to refute this. Laughable, but sad they are indoctrinating college kids who aren't alcoholic. I only hope these kids are smart enough to see through the 12 step bullshit.

Having been to college . . .
having been to a college campus, and gotten a degree from one, I doubt that "12-Steppism" will survive very long on them, as colleges teach people to: THINK CRITICALLY AND QUESTION EVIDENCE. something that NO 12-Step group can handle! Maybe they will survive as a source of ridicule! ;)

And they call Columbus a cow town......
I moved to Columbus Ohio 3 years ago and started looking around for alternative programs. Nothing to be found in this cow town. Not even at OSU - one of the largest college campuses in America. When I called a year or so ago to speak with the head of the student wellness program she said they only hold 12 step meetings everyday at noon. I asked if she meant AA - she replied ...."just 12 steps for whatever the issue". So a federally & state funded large college campus only holds AA ?? In 2012 ???

Why is it up to a college to hold any AA meetings? I know that Charleston College has an onsite meeting, but it has nothing to do with the school. The same is true of Carolina Coastal in Myrte Beach. Someone in the student body started the meeting.

"Tradition 10 - Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy." Please follow orders from the Interchurch Center if you are an AA member and don't comment.

DARE Still Fails to Reduce Alcohol and Drug Abuse
DARE Still Fails to Reduce Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The popular Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program has, for a quarter of a century, consistently failed to reduce alcohol or drug abuse. Not a single scientific research study yet published has found it to be effective.
Because of its clear ineffectiveness, the program was finally cut from federal funding. In the face of losing of losing money from the government, the management of the DARE corporation asked Zili Sloboda and Richard Stevens of the University of Akron to develop a new curriculum called "Take Charge of Your Life" for DARE.

It isn't for everyone. That shouldn't be a surprise as nothing is for everyone, but I wouldn't have missed the experience for anything. It was good for me. Got another call from the jail. I notice no one said much about that to me. I just don't know if bailing her out of jail again is a good thing (because she just goes back to the same old thing...) It's 20.00 a phonecall and I feel as if I am talking to a mud puddle.
But when she works the program, she does a good job. She does a mix of AA/NA. NA because her problem is the crack and AA because she met some people there that really love and care for her. Her mother sent pictures to me of Monica at her Notre Dame graduation. Rosalie told me that she wanted me to know that where Monica came from isn't where she is now. That was so sad because her mother has nothing to do with this and it is no reflection of the kind of mom she was....
