Born in Vermont in 1895, William Griffith Wilson (Bill W.) was considered a co-founder of AA when in fact all Bill W. did was incorporate some previous religious movements into his brain-less child.

Oh yes. Ann Landers (really Eppie Lederer) was one of the biggest A.A. promoters in the country. A.A. was always her answer to alcohol problems. Every time somebody drank too much, or got busted with a six-pack, A.A. was her recommendation. That went on as long as I can remember -- like from the 'sixties onwards. And she parrotted A.A. propaganda and dogma unquestioningly, as if it were gospel truth. Here are a few items about her:

The episode pretended to investigate the authenticity of an old letter, but the show was really a non-stop A.A. promotional piece where Gwen just gushed about how A.A. was the best thing in the world:

Mel Barger came on, and was touted as an expert on Alcoholics Anonymous. He parroted his usual A.A. mythology.

Of course there was no actual historical investigation of A.A. or the grandiose claims that it was the best cure for alcoholism. They neatly side-stepped all of that, and only investigated whether the letter was genuine.

The History Detectives promos advertise that "no secret is safe". Well the A.A. historical secrets sure were safe. Nobody mentioned anything about Bill Wilson's criminal behavior or sexual predation or theft or fraud or membership in a pro-Nazi cult religion.

Now the History Detectives have material for a new program: Investigating how they got hoodwinked into using the resources of Public Television to promote an old cult.

Maybe that should be changed to be 12 step treatment centers specifically?

I think there are 1 or 2 treatment centers out there that aren't TSF based.

Brain damaged 'Patient R' challenges theories of self awareness: According to some theories on how self-awareness arises in the brain, Patient R, a man who suffered a severe brain injury about 30 years ago, should not possess this aspect of consciousness. In 1980, a bout of encephalitis caused by the common herpes simplex virus damaged his brain, leaving Patient R, now 57, with amnesia and unable to live on his own. Even so, Patient R functions quite normally, said Justin Feinstein, a clinical neuropsychologist at the University of Iowa who has worked with him. "To a layperson, to meet him for the first time, you would have no idea anything is wrong with him," Feinstein said.
