Hazelden Applauds Health Care Ruling: Hazelden President and CEO Mark Mishek said he was greatly relieved by today's US Supreme Court decision to largely uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, calling it "an essential step forward for millions of people who need help overcoming addiction." Mishek noted that tens of millions of uninsured Americans now can gain access to nondiscriminatory addiction treatment services under the law, which includes addiction treatment as part of the "essential health benefits" package to be sold by all health care plans in the insurance "exchanges." "This historic, life-saving ruling lifts the burdens and obstacles that had been set before those who wished to find freedom from the disease of addiction," said Mishek.

At 28K a pop, teaching Bill WIlson chanting is on the rise.....
That 28K has a disproportionate amount spent on the "AA get out of jail free card" and would be better spent on "real" diseases instead of fake made up Spiritual Maladies. Hazelden is helping to destroy the insurance funding of the US healthcare system. They should bill each states correctional facility expenditures to make up the difference.

Hazelden are the unoffical storm troopers of the AA bible
What other organization is allowed to publish the original "Book of Shadows" called the "Big Book" (original monolith manuscript of Alcoholics Anonymous) and not get sued?

When WILL HMO's remove their head from their asses on this?
You would think that HMO's would be the FIRST to deny coverage of addiction "treatment", since it is CLEARLY VOLUNTARY BEHAVIOR, involving NO IN-voluntary acquisition (as real diseases do!). I look forward to some LAWSUITS from HMO's towards U.S. Dept. of HHS, etc. on this! Once it gets finalized in court that addiction is a VOLUNTARY BEHAVIOR, the HMO's will NOT have to cover 12 Step "treatment" (or any other kind of treatment for this crap!), and will save MILLIONS (of $!). Normally, I think that all HMO's should be micro-managed, since it IS they who drive up the cost of health care, but on this issue, I am on THEIR SIDE! They need to SUE! SUE! SUE! And be quick about it!

istj, you don't really feel
istj, you don't really feel that way do you? That it's all entirely voluntary? In any case, how would you like to see people handled who are trying to detox? I just personally feel that that requires medical assistance. Not that people get much of that now, but I'd like to see people treated more humanely and completely medically while detoxing--which would require insurance companies being on board.
Know what IS cunning and baffling? This argument between the disease and choice camps. I can't figure out which is worse.

Detox is different than paying to learn the 12 Steps
I don't believe that this article is talking about Detox, Hazelden could care less about Detox, they just want to make sure that they can continue to charge 28K to learn Bill Wilson chanting. Hazelden doesn't teach or run Detox facilities directly, but they are infiltrating them in an attempt to get them to send people Hazelden run or inspired rehab facilities.
