Infiltration of the Cult in UK schools

Harrogate schools to use drama to tackle teenage drinking
12 June 2012

"Schools in North Yorkshire are piloting a theatre scheme which aims to educate teenagers about the dangers of alcohol.

Harrogate has one of the highest levels of alcohol-related hospital admissions for under 18s in Yorkshire, according to the Centre for Public Health.

The play, by Bryan Bounds, is about the life of Bill Wilson the found of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Mr Bounds said the drama allowed students to learn about alcoholism and its destructive effects.

'Growing concern'

My Name is Bill, which is performed by Mr Bounds, the founder of the Leeds-based Amerrycan Theatre, was shown to critical praise at the Edinburgh Fringe and has been adapted for use in education.

Mr Bounds, himself a recovering alcoholic, said: "I've watched with growing concern about how alcohol has become such a big issue for young people.

"A lot of alcohol education is quite patronising and condescending but students are very switched on, very sophisticated."

The Centre for Public Health said Harrogate was second only to Wakefield in Yorkshire for alcohol-related hospital admissions for under 18s.

The drama is being shown to Year 12 students at Ashville College and St Aiden's School.

Marion Farrar, business liaison officer at St Aiden's School, said: "I think young people see alcohol as a norm these days which is a worrying trend.

"It is becoming more and more what you do on a night out as a matter of rite."

They might as well put up posters in the school about AA. I wonder if they also said that many courts around the world have ruled that AA or a religious organization and that there are safety concerns because meetings are not monitored?

That would be none of your business, Clara. I would never discuss my credentials (or lack thereof) here.

LFOD:

Nope. No one is. Orange does not grant law licenses. It's not meant as serious legal advice. Just sharing info. Anyway, I guess it does make me come across as sort of a pedant. No offense meant. You should check with a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction for any intellectual property advice you might need.

I was under the impression that the good people of the great state of Oregon had passed an amendment to the Oregon Constitution that legally recognized, and conferred upon, Orange the right to issue licenses to pratice law in said great state.

Perhaps I was misinformed.

Kidding allowed, except where the dishonorable judge becket is concerned.

What parts of the program did you choose not to adopt?

The part that says you cannot have red wine vinegar on your salad! There are parts that I didn't adopt, either.

It's good that you admit abstaining from alcohol in any form is part of the program, even though you reject this total abstinence part. I consider this progress for you.

flannigan, you know you are going to stomp on me for admitting the parts I didn't adopt but what the hell I need to start answering questions.
1) God
2) acceptance as preached on page 442.
3) To the wives Chap.
4) Fellowship propaganda about meds, relationships, sponsorship, abstinence, slips.
5) We Agnostics Chap.
This is a few off the top of my head.

I am certainly not going to "stomp on you". Thanks for your response. If you have time, I would be interested in other parts of the AA program that you choose not to adopt.

Trisha K.'s picture

Actually parts of the literature are minimal, To the wives and We agnostics piss me off because Bill really showed his arrogance, IMO.
Now if you want to debate what the fellowship of AA is saying today that is an entire different matter.

I never heard of the part of AA that said you couldn't have red wine vinegar on your salad but.... Are there other parts of the AA program that you choose not to adopt? Thanks for your response in advance.

Clara's picture

AA doesn't say that, Flannigan. It is my twist on everyone having such a field day over my choosing to eat crab soup as it was intended to be enjoyed, with a condiment splash of seasoned sherry. It's a behavior of some in the fellowship that choose to beieve that somehow the program dictates to them that they cannot use mouthwashes, toothpastes or other things that might have some sort of alcohol in them that could lead them to a relapse.

I think my interpretation of the program differs from some on the board, and it is their interpretations I reject. I don't agree with people that feel you cannot vote because our political system by nature is controversial. I don't believe, as some do on this forum, that the traditions mean I cannot have an opinion or be involved in something because I am an AA.

I don't believe nor was I ever told that if I didn't go to meetings until I died that I would in fact die. Perhaps for some, that is true. I do believe that I am an alcoholic and that I wouldn't be able to return to "normal drinking" as any that go to AA wish to do. For them, they should belong to a moderate drinking club because they won't feel at home in any program that supports complete abstinence and will always be at odds. AA is for those that have crossed that invisible line, but who also WANT to stop drinking. It stands to reason that a person that still wants to drink is going to find fault with the AA program. While it is suggested that sponsors be same sex, mine is a man and it's worked out wel.

Ironic's picture

I think that dumping sherry in your soup and calling it abstinence is like me calling myself abstinent from opiates and being on Subutex.

Neither one of us is getting high in this instance, but it isn't abstinence. Period.

Clara's picture

You are entitled to your opinion, Ironic. But I am not having a splash of sherry in my soup to manage an addiction.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

becket's picture

Maybe Clara is able to ingest alcohol responsibly now, without triggering a craving. According to many posters here it is possible to be a conservative drinker after having been a dependent one. I don't hear anyone giving those posters shit for suggesting that controlled drinking without triggering is possible.

Clara's picture

What is also ironic is that Ironic is comparing something I perhaps do twice a year to something she does daily.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

Pennywise's picture

You just demonstrated our point, Becket. Clara ingests alcohol responsibly, which is moderation, not abstinence. No one is giving her shit for ingesting some booze with her soup. Instead, we are giving her shit for ingesting alcohol while still claiming to be abstinent. If she did not claim to be abstinent from alcohol this conversation would have died a long time ago.

"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."

becket's picture

I said "maybe", Pennywise. Maybe this is the case with Clara. I have days when it all makes sense, the things I read here; other days it takes six cups of coffee and a novena.

“The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”
― Christopher Hitchens, Letters to a Young Contrarian

Pennywise's picture

Lol. It can be whirlwind, no doubt. But thankfully this one is easy. Clara proudly admits that she enjoys adding a splash of sherry to her soup, even if she has to specially order it when the restaurant does not normally include it with the dish. The alcohol does not burn off this way, a point which Clara concedes. Thus, Clara ingests a small amount of alcohol. Abstinence from alcohol means not ingesting any alcohol, whereas moderation means moderating one's alcohol consumption. Because Clara ingests alcohol, but only a little bit, Clara practices moderation and not abstinence. Pretty simple, wouldn't you say?

The more important question, naturally, is why does she continue to argue against this? The answer to that question might not be so clear. Care to take a stab at it?

"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."

Clara's picture

Which I have no problem with despite Mr. Fish not serving it in its traditional way. It's not even moderation, IMO. It isn't like sitting down to a drink and promising myself only to have one (which, of course, always meant at least two since I would be paying on a credit card and you have a minimum) There isn't even an attempt or consideration of "moderation." You have your bowl of soup and you are done.

I don't argue it. I should have been able to say it and it be a dead issue long ago, but Penny decided that he would call me out each anytime I said I was abstinent because, IHO, I am not. Keep your arguments together, Pen. But it also isn't just Penny. Brett often includes it in his poetry.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

Pennywise's picture

My arguments are together. There is no inconsistency and it all flows together in perfect harmony.
