I wonder, actually I question, if Bill W. stayed sober throughout the years. Regular commenters make a good point.

Why isn't Bill Wilson's sober date celebrated?

Everything else in AA is celebrated. Seems every day is special: Groups celebrate their individual existence, Dr. Bob's anniversary is celebrated, The BB publication, etc. Perhaps it's a ploy to get into the newspapers. You know, some of that "attraction not promotion" type of publicity.

The full length YouTube video (submitted by AA.org) was removed (by contributor) shortly after Stinkin' Thinkin' posted about the video in their blog:

Funny how more of the damaging articles disappear from the internet. I've witnessed this myself. Fan of AA or not, it is probably a wise decision to save historical events on your own hard drive. Never know when it will be removed, a result of an oversight or to purposely keep negative aspects of the program that relies on "attraction" out of public view.

Don't know with what, but that fucker is loaded. It is not just his elbow slipping, his entire head and body is dragging behind. I have seen this kind of body language many, many times. In the heroin junkie parks in Germany, and AA meetings in the States.
My guess would be some anti-depressant he was taking during his 11 year skid through depression. But then he learned to "pray right" as he explained in the 12x12 scripture and everything was wonderful again.

I was disappointed that there was no sound. The video itself speaks volumes about the lecherous conman (otherwise known as jesus reincarnate).

I would be surprised if what he was saying made any sense at all.

I think the reason people respond to Bill's elbow slip is that we've all seen it -- or done it -- and there's always some excess of mind-altering substance involved. That doesn't just happen. Before I clipped it, I had this brief pang of conscience, where I said to myself, "Oh, come on. Everyone goes haywire sometimes." I mean, I'm naturally clumsy (so I hear). But, if you really watch that... It's not just the misjudged elbow, which happens (at least to me); it's the interminable "save," where he lolls around in his chair like an infant until he's almost vertical again, and carries on like nothing happened. No one restores equilibrium like a drunk. That's why they survive the fatal car accidents they cause. Straight people don't have an interest in acting like they're not fucked up.

So... one of our brilliant readers had the presence of mind to copy the entire Bill W.'s Story series, before it was censored. So, I have a zip file of flv files that I don't know how to open... Just sayin'.

You guys are right about the elbow. I watched the entire zzzzzzzzzz when you first posted it on ST and I recall thinking that it would have been more likely that he'd of become part of his chair. People be getting all cozy, maybe leaning back and tipping the entire chair off the floor. This time, I actually thought it appeared that a woman, maybe Ms. Helen Wynn, was sitting across the table and he was trying to take a peak up her dress.

Ilse, I miss your posts. You also seemed to catch something the rest of us overlook. As you said, "straight people don't have an interest in acting like they're not fucked up", so they would have been the first to acknowledge their clumsiness in a joke. Were people used to seeing Bill like that? I didn't see/hear anyone wondering if he was OK.

Notice when Bill was trying to straighten up he over did it and just about fell over the other way.

The more I think of it the more I'm convinced that over-protective AA Org (don't want to ruin societies sobriety) removed the video because Bill was known to "secretly" drink on occasion.

No, that isn't a fact. I was throwing out a theory, that AA archivists are aware of such a secret and this is why they remove any documentation that is suggestive of the possibility.

wilson secretly drinking would not surprise me at all, they say AA has a number of binge drinkers, those who will not drink for weeks at a time then have a full day binge. Certainly many of us know of those in the rooms claiming years of sobriety while hiding in the closet chug a lugging a few down.

ah Beckett they were secrets @ one time, they are no longer secrets. It is now common knowledge that Wilson was a pathological liar, he never went to college, didn't even graduate from H.S., wasn't a stock broker. We now know that Wilson was a thief, the big book, the embezzling, bill padding, etc. We know that Wilson never worked again @ any job after creating AA, he begged, scammed & stole. We know Wilson was an adultery, Helen & other women, the more vulnerable, the easier to manipulate & exploit. Learning of any more lies, deceptions & frauds regarding Wilson is no surprise. Wilson remained an addict until his death, he smoked himself to death, wouldn't have been surprised if he drank along with smoking & tripping or getting high on stuff too. Wilson & the truth were strangers, had nothing to do with one another. This is the truth, whether you believe it or not. You want to worship, adore & love a really bad & immoral dude, that has harmed & damaged many innocents, knock yourself out.

To be honest, I at one time thought he was nice looking. Pictured s a young man of course. I was never "attracted" to him, according to looks he isn't my type at all. Same goes for his personality, this before and of course after I knew the history. I always sensed pomposity and never liked the "friends of Bill W." phrase because of that. I think that members enjoyed being part of a secret club and didn't give a shit about anonymity.
