Fun on Derby Day

Today is the Kentucky Derby. This is the biggest day in Horse Racing.

http://www.kentuckyderby.com/

I thought it would be fun if we played. There is a 20 horse field and it is very difficult to predict a winner. I suggest that we each pick 3 horses and depending on which position those horses finish, apply points and tally them. Least points win.......bragging rights? LOL.

Example: If the (3) horses I chose placed 5th, 16th, and 9th - I'd have a total of 30 points.

Here is the field:

1. Daddy Long Legs

2. Optimizer

3. Take Charge Indy

4. Union Rags

5. Dullahan

6. Bodemeister

7. Rousing Sermon

8. Creative Cause

9. Trinniberg

10. Daddy Nose Best

11. Alpha

12. Prospective

13. Went the Day Well

14. Hansen

15. Gemologist

16. El Padrino

17. Done Talking

18. Sabercat

19. I'll Have Another

20. Liaison

I suggest posting your pics by 5:00 pm Eastern, the race starts shortly following.

Well you know I have to go for "Creative Cause". I think "I'll have another" might be drunk, so, no, not that one. I'll go with "Daddy Long Legs" aaand "Went the Day Well."

Strange that there are 20 horses. One out of 20 will win - that's 5% - spontaneous remission rate.
That's the way AA works. Get 20 through the door, one will stay. They've then got 90 days to brainwash him into thinking AA did it...lol

In Memoriam . . .

Ruffian April 17, 1972–July 7, 1975

"Ruffian's eleventh race was run at Belmont Park on July 6, 1975. It was a match race between Ruffian and that year's Kentucky Derby winner, Foolish Pleasure. In the past, the two horses had shared the same jockey, Jacinto Vasquez. Vasquez chose to ride Ruffian in the match race, believing her to be the better of the two horses; Braulio Baeza rode Foolish Pleasure. The "Great Match" was heavily anticipated and attended by more than 50,000 spectators, with an estimated television audience of 20 million.

"As she left the starting gate she hit her shoulder hard, straightened herself, and they were off and running. The first quarter-mile (402 m) was run in a blazing 221⁄5 seconds, with Ruffian ahead by a nose. Little more than 1 furlong (201 m) later, Ruffian was in front by half a length when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. Vasquez tried to pull her up, but the filly wouldn't stop. She went on running, pulverizing her sesamoids, ripping the skin of her fetlock, tearing her ligaments until her hoof was flopping uselessly.

"Vasquez said it was impossible for him to stop her. She still tried to run and finish the race." ~ Schwartz, Jane (1994-03-02). Ruffian: Burning From the Start. New York: Ballantine Books. ISBN 0-345-38602-7

"Ruffian is buried near a flag pole in the infield of Belmont Park, with her nose pointed toward the finish line." ~ Jones, Kathleen (2002). "Ruffian". ThoroughbredChampions.com

Gemologist, creative cause and optimizer for me. Creative to win. None are in Red Rum's class though!

Obvious choices:

Optimizer - is not powerless
Alpha - is not powerless
Liaison - Works with others, not against them

Collectively we did very well.
The worst POSSIBLE score was 57 points and the best was 6. The participating members from the OPF averaged a score of 27 points.

The OPF game resulted in a tie with Becket and Avo. When I looked at Becket’s selections following the race and saw that she had selected “I’ll Have Another” as her first pick I was in shock. She selected the winner of the Kentucky Derby! Which is actually impressive. Congratulations becket, I hope you played him for at couple dollars. A $2 wager would have profited you $30!!

Unfortunately having the winner within her selections didn’t give becket first place in our little game, she has to share the title with me. My selections ran 3rd, 7th, and 16th. We both scored 23 points.

The order of finish (7 participants):

1) Becket (23 points)
1) Avo (23 points)
3) Ben (25)
4) Dan (28)
5) JR (29)
5) C&E (29)
7) mfc (32)

Thanks everyone, it was fun!

Ben, we both had 'Union Rags' and he got out of the gate poorly and started off last. 'I'll Have Another' was close up throughout and ran impressively. All top 3 horses raced well.

I bet on Dullahan for across the board and made a profit of $1 and some change. Haha! The next time I'll play is on Preakness Day in a couple of weeks. The Belmont Stakes (my favorite) is two weeks after that. I hope Dullahan is rested and runs in that one. It's a longer race and he's bred for the distance. Then I wait until Novemember and play on the Breeders Cup.

I was joking. You're really into the horses are you? I used to be when I lived near a couple of racecourses. A friend of my father's was the local blacksmith for all the racehorses, so we got plenty of complementary tickets and things. I haven't been for ages - great day out. I've got 2 racecourses just up the road, but they're both NH (jumping) courses - that's for winter time.

No, I'm not really into them, lol. I play about 6 times a year. It is a fun day out, but I like the bigger days that have more activities than just betting. Then there might be a band, pony rides for kids, face painting, all that.
