Why do they teach this

Forums:

A person I know is taking a course on how to be an Alcoholic and Drug counselor. Of course this is her first week or so and the school is already starting with the \\\"A.A.\\\" is the only answer. And some of these treatment centres cost up into the thousands of dollars to go there. Man what a sham. You may get a massage out of the deal but the bottom line is you will still end up in A.A. or a 12 step program as your answer. Sigh.

Thanks for sharing this Cindee, you have offered another example of how AA gets free press and puff while also reminding us why it is difficult to get any reasonable help from a substance abuse counselor.

I hope to see the day when just the opposite is taught. That Alcoholics Anonymous has an awful success rate and in fact more people die than maintain sobriety.

They teach this because it is what they believe, the counselor is probably a member of AA. Please inform your friend of ALL the other options avaliable so that they may be the beginning of change. I have achieved success in both the HAMS harm reduction program and AA.
Other than AA my only options are; jails, institutions, death, quit it, other programs, moderation, or dangerous drinking.

Ben, the latest is that Clara comes to the OPF because it is \"also a tool for me in sobriety\". We are helping her stay sober. Apparently she stays sober by propagating AA to people that have been hurt by the program. She\'s sucking the blood from us. Since she doesn\'t like the meetings in El Paso she comes here and fucks with people all day long. Selfishness is one of the AA principles.

Selfishness is one of the AA principles? Sorry, I disagree. AA may teach a person that it is a priority to take care of himself so he can take better care of others, but nowhere does the \"principle\" of selfishness appear in the actual program of AA. I think you\'re extrapolating here, avogadno.

I seriously heard this routinely. Especially when a devout AA was asked for a favor or to participate in an unrelated act of kindness. This isn\\\'t bullshit either.

If not, perhaps it is because it is possibly a relatively new saying. There being at least a full 10 years since you left the program and I started.

That aside, can you not concede that Clara\\\'s insistence on regularly posting here in the OPF is selfish? She continually does so despite knowing that it is bothersome to the majority here, yet her benefit is only that she is exercising her right to do so. I think it\\\'s rather self seeking for her to do.

I don\'t think that cindee was saying that her friend didn\'t know what was going to be taught. I think she was expressing her own exasperation about what is taught in drug counselor programs. She simply asked the question \"Why is this taught?\" It\'s a good question. I have a friend who\'s a nurse. She had to go to a couple AA meetings as part of her coursework when she was in nursing school. Just AA meetings-not \"any recovery group meeting\"-AA meetings. Why? I remember a handful of nursing students coming to the meeting that I used to attend who said the same thing. They were instructed to go to two AA meetings and write about them. Just AA. Why?
