You know you're beyond help when you even imply that yours truly could be defined as "far right".

You know you're brainwashed when you keep trying to use what you've learned from reading "Working with Others" to convert the far right whackaloons.

"If I forget who I am, I am myself. If I remember who I am, I am you."

you know you are brainwashed when you can recite the steps/traditions in 3 different languages.

When you can name more AA Traditions than U.S. Constitutional Amendments.

You know you're brainwashed when you believe gawd is arranging parking spaces for you, but you don't wonder if you're going to squish someones disease that's doing pushups in the parking lot when you park there.

That one is compliments of G2K BTW.

I actually did start doing my second in excel but was told to write it out on paper the way it was done by Bill by my state of the art sponsor! It does not say use a computer anywhere in the big book or in the approved literature. Trying to alter the programme in this way can only lead to relapse.

You know you're brainwashed if the phrase "co-sign someone's denial" even makes sense to you.

You know you're brainwashed when every waking moment of your day is spent cutting and pasting "news stories" unrelated to the program of Alcoholic Anonymous and waiting for the other brainwashed people around you to affirm the unthinkableness, the unquestioned veracity, even the potential "could have been" realness of said news stories.

“The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”
― Christopher Hitchens, Letters to a Young Contrarian

There's a term for that ...

You know you're brainwashed if you spout off AA thought stopping slogans in everyday conversations.

You know you're brainwashed when you ask your mother to sign your big book.

Go ahead, enjoy yourselves - it's getting late, much later than you think.

when AA occupies your attention more than an average AAer's even though you ostensibly have no current connection, will never attend another meeting, hate, hate, hate AA, but can't quite think of not thinking about not thinking AA, think, not think AA AA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

the spin cycle stays stuck on, going round and round, shimmying spastically, and you can't stop it because it's all AA's fault.

If you say, "I'm Not Brainwashed!", really loud, over and over again, you'll hardly notice the machine's on the fritz.

"Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy."

Y'all remember? Oct 3, 1980 Paulson to Geitner, "you can't leave this room until you take this money".
Talk about brainwashed. Paulson went on to say the same thing to 8 different major financial institutions. He did this till 65% of the $700 billion was handed out without any restrictions. None of these institutions had to change anything in how they went about their business.
Only in America can the the rich get a free loan.
I like Rachel Maddow. She isn't brainwashed and a fucking whackaloon like most of you here.

You know you're brainwashed, if you think it's a conspiracy.

when you think you're brainwashed.

alkieanon's picture

You know you're brainwashed, if you think no one is listening to your story.

Isn't the whole point of brainwashing that you don't know you're brainwashed? You know you're brainwashed when you don't know you're brainwashed.

alkieanon's picture

You know you're brainwashed, if you think some one is listening to your story, but don't know for sure.

there could be an apparent rapport between two brainwashed people, but what seems conversation to a third observer is actually talking past and unconnected jabbering. And if two people are talking, one brainwashed and the other not, how do you determine which is which? Then there are degrees of brainwashing, and domains and triggers and internalized and double-secret covert and such, where the an arrangement of circumstances might unleash the brainwashed effect although mostly such a partially brainwashed type strikes as conversationally braindirty.

I don't know if anyone here has read any recent studies/articles on "low effort thinking". The discussion has turned quite political lately, but I can't help but see an xA angle as well.

when an ex-AAer, who now decries AA, challenges you to pissing contest of who's more thorough, more whole-hog, gone farther, deeper, and longer into the AA program, and you lose, thereby rendering you by default less brainwashed according to the alleged criteria of brainwashery, but you don't really care anyhow; thus and by this fact: not brainwashed.

alkieanon's picture

You know you're brainwashed, if you think the person standing next to you (at a McDonald's :) is in some sort of 12 step program.

JR Harris's picture

You think that the people standing next to you at McDonald's are in a 12 Step program, when it is actually the people in the kitchen made to hit bottom using the Jellinek curve.......

You know you\'re brainwashed when you continually identify with the part that says, \"there are such unfortunates, they seem to have been born that way......\" and think I will never get this I am an unfortunate and will never be healed cuz I don\'t grasp this shite.
