Stepping Stones, the historic home of Bill and Lois Wilson in Katonah, NY was designed as a single family home and as such the water, septic system and driveway that were designed for it has a planned maximum capacity as a single family home. With the current and planned expansion of it use as a mecca for the members of Alcoholics Anonymous, the house, its plumbing, driveway and roads leading to it are not designed to handle a maximum of 200 visitors a day, much less the current cap of 750 visitors during the annual Family Groups Picnic held in June of every year for the last 60 years.
There have been renovations to the house, paid for with a $70,000 Historic Preservation Grant from the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation which replaced and repaired 28 windows, the roof, copper flashing and copper gutters. This was paid for by the State of New York despite the Stepping Stones Foundation having well over 7 million in assets. The garage that Bill Wilson built has been renovated to act as a Welcome Center with two unisex bathrooms, one being handicapped accessible, a meeting area and a coffee area. Due to the condition of the plumbing in the main house, the water has been turned off, meaning these are the only restroom facilities on the 8 acre property.

Stepping Stones is located over the Croton Watershed and near the Muscoot and Croton Reservoir supplying the water supply to New York City and the State expects the residents of Westchester county to be taxed and to pay for an estimated 10 million dollars a year for the next 10 years to protect this valuable resource for New York City. In keeping with this mandated requirement, all homes and businesses must have their septic tanks inspected every year and pumped every three years to protect this valuable watershed and the cost is to be paid for by the residents. One thing that should be noted is that a residential septic tank is designed for a single family unit, not an influx that could approach 200 visitors a day. Residential septic tanks simply are not designed for this capacity. Over use which the turning of Stepping Stones into the mecca they are planning will cause the septic tank to overflow and raw sewage will leak into the attached Leechfield contaminating the surrounding groundwater and most likely smell. Especially during the summer months when the use will be expanded.

Katonah Village Library - June 1st, 2012 scheduling conflict
The Katonah Village Library is planning a Friday, June 1st, 2012 Summer Benefit and the Library will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 2, 2012. Given the possible 750 visitors at the 61st Annual Stepping Stones Family Group Picnic on Saturday 2, 2012 this is inadvisable and they should reschedule, especially since the Library is two blocks from the Katonah Railroad Station where everyone is being told to park.
http://www.katonahlibrary.org/
The library is located 2 blocks away from the Katonah R.R. Station, on the Metro North/Harlem Line. Near & in front of the library there is only street parking for 1, 2 & 4 hours until 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Street Parking Rules are RIGOUROUSLY ENFORCED.

The Katonah Library has a rich history and it started with the Katonah Village Improvement Society (KVIS) who donated the first books to the Library. The KVIS operates two websites.
The older one is: http://www.kvis.typepad.com/
The newer one they are migrating to: http://www.katonahvis.com/index.html

Katonah Lawsuit against Martha Stewart to protect town name
Katonah Valley Improvement Society (KVIS) sues Martha Stewart for using the towns name but lets the Stepping Stones compound of the Spiritualist, Occultist and Adulterer Bill Wilson become a national landmark and mecca for thousands of people a year?
"In 2005, after a 5 month stint in federal prison for lying to investigators about a stock trade, Stewart sought refuge (while completing her sentence on house arrest) in her 152-acre Katonah NY home which she had bought for $16 million five years before. In the same year, Stewart, through her company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO), sought to trademark the name of the posh hamlet as her inspiration for a line of sofas, four poster beds, dining room tables, paints, and other products described on Stewart's website as "classic American style with a touch of formal refinement . . .[and] a spirit of refreshed traditionalism."
In April 2007, though, during the last phase of approval with the United States Patents & Trademarks Office, residents of the Westchester County hamlet of the same name—the one with a $916,000 average home price that prohibited Starbucks from doing business there in 1990—filed objections to the granting of the trademark. Katonah, a town of 12,400 residents about 40 miles north of New York City, was renamed in 1852 to honor the great 17th century Indian chief and leader of the Ramapough Indians in the New York/New Jersey area who sold the land to white settlers in 1680.
The first organization to object to the trademark was the Katonah Valley Improvement Society (KVIS), organized in 1887, which has started a campaign called "Nobody Owns Katonah." The group's spokesperson Lydia Landesberg has labeled the controversy a moral issue—"the right of a community to its own identity." KVIS is concerned that small local businesses could be prohibited from using their own town's name in marketing and similar activities without asking permission from MSLO. Two of those businesses are hardware stores, who have joined in the official opposition."

Katonah and Martha Stewart "name" settlement
Comment by the Katonah Valley Improvement Society (KVIS) on their accomplishment:
"Lydia Landesberg, who is president of the Improvement Society but said she was speaking personally, said Wednesday, "The fact that a small group of ordinary citizens was able to persuade a huge corporation to significantly alter its marketing plans is remarkable. I believe that we have greatly minimized what could have been a tremendously restricting situation for the Katonah community.":

I believe that the CVIS should be doing the same thing with Stepping Stones. Do you think it would have been OK if Martha Stewart was an AA member?
