The Twelve Biggest Secrets of Alcoholics Anonymous

I thought I'd start discussions on this "chapter" of the Orange Papers. Since we've been disussing different aspects of this recently I won't go in order that Orange has them listed.

"A.A. flat-out lies when it says it is a program of rigorous honesty; it is just the opposite — a program of rigorous dishonesty":

http://orange-papers.org/orange-secrets.html

If you read all of my posts in this forum you will know that my worst grievance about AA is that they LIE to get members and to keep them. I don't care if AA is religious, I care that they LIE and say that they are NOT religious. I could care less that AA is a program to help people get closer to their higher power, but I do care a lot that they LIE and claim that it is a program about getting sober. It is clearly not. And I don't care if AA is a failure or not. I care that AA LIES, claiming to have saved millions and that it is the only, or the best way to get sober.

Finding out that I had been deceived by Alcoholics Anonymous and that they "fake" practically everything about their organization by way of greed and for power, was a big moment for me. I was finally able to start living without the mess of confusion that had been circling throughout my brain for 5 years.

Right on. I too could care less if a group of bored losers want to bullshit themselves into believing they are somehow in fit spiritual condition by sitting on their selfcentered asses and talking about their disease all year round. But dont tell me this is treating alcoholism.
I learned a long time ago if you want to be sober dont drink. If you want to be happy, go do what makes you happy. ha

Having to put their cigarettes under the bed so that every morning they remember to pray to god that they won't drink that day and every night to thank god for making them not drink that day. Jeez with all that obsessing over drinking its' amazing any of them can get through the day. I don't have to pray or even make a decision everyday. My decision's already made. I learned my lesson and I learned it well. But they deny that they have that capability. Thank Dog I don't have to live my life that way.

"Self-centered asses"? How does their sitting anywhere, discussing anything, affect you? Answer: it does not. What entitles you to judge them as being "self-centered"? Answer: absolutely nothing. You are protesting too much. If you didn't care you would feel no compulsion to remark upon them either way.

if only it did not. But what goes on in the rooms and in parks effect many adversely. One cannot protest enough. We need to scream from the roof tops to let the world know to stop the fatalities in AA.

But, Anti, at the end of the day, blogging on a board will produce little effect to your aim. This may help you personally to resolve how you feel about AA, but it won't ruin it. Do it if makes you feel better, but I doubt it will change anything much.

I don't think it will happen and I don't think it does happen. Certainly not the way Anti hysterically portrays it. I have known people to leave programs of all kinds that went back out and died alcoholic deaths of liver failure or throat hemmoraging. One of my friends, Mark Erwin, died that way despite going to several rehabs, trying AA, trying Celebrate Recovery, trying that vitamin 7 day cure thing that guy has out. I coudn't stay sober and that is the bottom line. But no one killed him. This type of posting is just mongering, and that type of emotionalism never really sticks.

At the end of the day, Orange Papers and other similiar blogs are making a difference. You can think otherwise if you wish. But we get confirmation all the time from people who left AA and AA in part because of the support they got form the blogs. Also much is being done legally as well. More courts are starting to allow alternatives like. www.smartrecovery.org We have our work cut out for us. But progress is being made, and lives are being saved. Sorry if people want to discourage the good works of the activists on this topic. That is their problema.

But courts had that already, and it had nothing to do with your efforts. When I read the sentencing options, it never says AA or NA or SMART, Alcoholics Victorious or anything specific. It says "self-help" or similar language. And that is fine. AA has always taken the position that it isn't for everyone and they can vertainly choose. An entire chapter is based on that.

Actually, you're wrong here again, Clara. Antidenial worked very hard to get alternatives listed for DUI's in her area and she was eventually successful in doing so. It's rare that such options are presented and would be regional.

I wouldn't know what area that would be. But I didn't come to this board and hear that for the first time here. In fact, the writing has always been generic and for the most part included the words "out patient." They were so careful NOT to have any particular program listed. And I don't care how people get sober. I just care that they do.

Can you disclose what area this might be? The only indication is Florida, but I would hate to assume.

Clara's picture

I just spoke to my sponsor and he says that the language is rather open because DUI is a charge. You can be under the influence of narcotics and get a DUI. You can be driving under the influence of alcohol and be charged with DUI. You can be under the influence of prescription medication and be out driving a car and get a DUI. In his experience of decades, there hasn't been a specific organization given an advantage over the other in sentencing laws. Here in Texas, they have DUI school. What that means, I don't know and hope never to know.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

Our judicial system mandating the religious 12 step meetings is a bone of contention across this country.
If it were not a problem we would not be having to sue courts and probation officers on constitutional grounds.
My efforts along with many other activists have made a difference. We will continue. We have the law on our side. I welcome anyone else who wants to help to come on board.

I can tell you one thing, I will not be discouraged by a 12 stepper. It is 12 steppers that lit a fire under me, and the more I learn, I am even more passionate about it. Particularly in preventing more sexual molestation of children, and emotional damage that is being done to them with AA dogma and other 12 step practices.

Texas is one of the worst offending states of mandating AA, and not allowing options. Very Conservative judges and religious zealots from that part of the country.

Fortunately, I haven't had the delight of appearing before a Texas judge. As I said, I don't know what they mean by DUI school, but no particular program is mandated in the sentencing laws I found. That could be up to the discretion of the probation officer.

Thank you causeandeffect. Last July the entire state of Florida changed their Probation Order to not state AA, but to allow probation officers to have more flexibility in what type of meetings.

Even though this was a huge positive- hard core AA believers are still mandating AA across the state.
It is very sad that we have to fight for our constitutional rights. But fight we must.

Where can I be linked to the sentencing as they wer prior to your efforts? The reason I ask is that other states have had those things for a long time. If you've been helpful, great, but it just seems that Florida was behind in something other states already had. Having said this, thank you, because there is nothing more boring than someone forced to come into a room and sit there with that pout, crossed arms, lip out... They can take that energy somewhere else and leave the spot for someone that wants it. Just as an FYI, I was a habitual drunk driver. It was absolutely shameful, but I was NEVER sent to AA. I paid fines, got charges reduced, had the record erased... In DC, I had to spent a weekend at a alcohol seminar that met in the afternoon. By the grace of God, my behavior didn't hurt anyone.

Exactly, C&E. The truth is slowly getting out there, and the voices of those who really care about the fate of alcoholics and addicts, and are concerned that people who need help get some real help, are beginning to be heard. There are still some out there who are in complete denial about the 12-step programme, and still seek to promote it as some kind of effective solution (why they continue to do this when it flies in the face of all the evidence is anyone’s guess), but fortunately the stranglehold that AA and the 12-step program has over ‘recovery’ is beginning to be questioned more and more.

There is a problem in that the very small percentage for whom it ‘works’ tend to be very vocal, and still insist in public that is a proper and effective approach to tackling addiction because they believe it 'worked for them' and are incapable of seeing the wider picture And there are also the financial self-interests of AA and the 12-step rehab industry to be considered, and these should never be underestimated. But blogs like this have made a big difference in improving things, I think, and have inspired many of us to go out and ‘carry the message’ to the wider public and to health providers and politicians.

But yes, I agree that we have out work cut out. We're small fry against powerful vested interests and people coming from a position of blinkered faith rather than reality. But we're beginning to make some difference, I think.

Got the reply thing wrong again! I wish my doorknob would help me out with this.

I don't know how to check this, but occasionally someone here posts that the Orange Papers are getting "a million hits a day" or something like that. Even if you take a tiny percentage of those people, where is that overflow to the forum? The same people are here day in and day out with a rare new poster joining the "discussions". It does not appear that there is any measurable way to determine the exact effectiveness of the "good works of the activists" on this forum. Of course people leave AA, but before, during and after their departures, how can you accurately say the Orange Papers or this forum - or your rantings - had anything to do with their leaving? That seems like credit where it is not necessarily due.
