Glad to see you've gotten a forum opened, up, Orange. I had tried it some years ago, but it became more trouble than it was worth at the time, and never did get a very big membership. You've got enough of a following on your site to get a large and vibrant community. I've been completely out of the AA pro/con debate for a few years now, and have just been living a normal life of a normal person (something unthinkable for the true believers!). I still keep in touch with Jimmy from time to time, but not as often as I'd like, since he's even busier with a normal life than I am.
Good luck and best wishes for a successful forum, Orange!

Hi Orange! It's been a while. I have been visiting your site more often recently and I am excited to see that you've gotten the forums up. I recently celebrated 5 years of sobriety. Who would have thought! I honestly give you and your work most of the credit for my sobriety.
I still remember the first night I found your site. I was sitting in front of a small coffee shop on a warm summer night, browsing critiques on AA with my laptop. I was sober only a little while but feeling VERY awkward about AA. As soon as I started reading the letters I couldn't stop. At once I finally knew that I was not the only one who felt this way about AA. That night begun my journey on a path of a new found freedom. Since then I have turned some close friends onto your site, as well. I am happy to report that they all seem to be living life to its fullest, and have since outgrew the teachings of AA.

Orange, my eyes were merely blinking before i came across your informative, factual and ingenious site, i cannot begin to tell you how happy i am that i got myself educated, i was blinded by the "lie" for many years, today i see and today i activly try to promote education and choice within the "recovery industry"...........your efforts are not in vain.

Glad to see you got this forum going, Orange ! Good Work ! I enjoy reading the letters that are written, and quite a few of them are very similar to many negative experiences I've had in 12 step land. At least now, I know I'm not the only one who adds 2+2 and gets 4 ! Forums add to the availability of all the information we need so that we won't think we are crazy when we are not, since it is completely rational to see the seriousness of how so many steppers get away with so much crap and how unacceptable it really is.
Hello, Orange! I've been on 12-step-free for forever, since it started on egroups.com, and I first saw your "Orange Papers" on the AAdeprogramming site. I haven't kept up with your whole site over the years (man, you get a LOT of letters!), but this has been a great resource for challenging the dominance and "benign-ness" of AA and other 12-step groups. Keep up the good work!
I'm going to try. Alas, I haven't seen her in 1 1/2 years, because last year I was busy moving
out to Forest Grove, instead of hanging out with the geese. I saw her as a flying adult just once.
Late summer, two years ago, I was feeding all of the geese and had just run out of bread when a family flew in, and walked up to me. When they saw that I was out of bread, they turned to the flock and blended in to start munching the grass. Just as they turned, I clearly saw the parents' head markings, and realized that they were Carmen's parents. So of course the three grown children with them were the three goslings, including Carmen. I quickly snapped some shots, but don't know how clear I got Carmen.
The big problem there now is that I don't know what Carmen looks like as an adult. I'm going to see if I can run into her this spring, and get some good shots of her.
She should be taking a husband this fall, and next spring she will have babies of her own.

Thanks for the thanks. And don't feel bad about getting hoodwinked. Remember that it is a world-class cult with some guys and gals who have 10 or 20, or even 30 or 40 years of practice in fooling and deceiving people. And they have had 70 years now to refine their recruiting and indoctrination techniques, and to work out their slogans and raps and snappy come-backs and condescending put-downs. And they started off by using Frank Buchman's mind-bending techniques that he had been developing and refining for 20 years already. And Buchman, in turn, was using the dogma and recruiting tricks of Henry B. Wright, who got them from others before him. So they got a giant head start on you. They had more than a century of refining their cultish tricks before you came along. It was never a fair fight.
Hello Soberman,
I've been kicked off of a few forums myself, too. But I'm going to make this one very hard to get kicked off of. So far, the only thing on my list is posting advertisements for fake Viagra and Russian porno sites and such junk.
Hey Orange,
So nice to see you have a forum. Wow. Dilemma tonight. My friend has gotten time off work because of a bit of a stress breakdown. Now she has to attend A.A. she asked me if I would go with her tonight because she doesn't want to go alone. I hate A.A. and really don't want to travel across town to hear a bunch of bullshit. I feel like cancelling, I sure don't feel like encouraging her. What to do? What to do? I told her about your site but it goes in one ear and out the other. I don't know maybe she thinks she will make friends at A.A. or something wonderful. haha.
P.S. My sister is working for A.A. head office in a major Canadian city. She has to do a lot of work but makes really good money. Good enough that she quit her other job that paid over $25 buck an hour. Now I am not saying that A.A. is paying that much but she is a total A.A. zombie and it is quite irritating.
I think I'd try to take your friend to a SMART meeting. Or SOS. or WFS. If she were to actually go to like three of those meetings, I think it would show her something. Like a sane, sensible meeting. Maybe even trade meetings. That is, you accompany her to A.A. tonight, and she goes with you to a different kind of meeting in the next few days.
And you could tell her that if she really believes she needs meetings, there are many choices.
I went to A.A. with her. She says she has to go through the psychiatrist and needs the support. Anyway, some guy was saying A.A. makes no money and that even if one wanted to leave money in a will one would have to say their spouse or whomever was a member of A.A. and all A.A. would take would be 3 grand and give the rest back. Yeah right, never heard that before. I passed when it was my turn because there was a couple of guys there from detox and I didn't want to cause shit. But I got the guy who said A.A. doesn't make money etc. alone for a couple of minutes after the meeting. And you know damned if there wasn't a painted portrait picture of Bill W. and Dr. B. staring right at me. I told my friend, Look at the "evil one" meaning Bill W. Anyway, the guy tried to give me literature and I must have sounded like a nut and said, Bill W. ripped off A.A. and the Big Book copyright. He said, well he was our co-founder, he had affairs on his wife, he was far from perfect as you and I are not. I still mumbled on about the money for some reason and said "the evil one:, line to him about Bill again. The guy said, "oh so you are not new to all this?" I said, "no I'm not I know about Ebby, (of all people to bring up, haha) and I wrote down your website and said, "why don't you check this site out." He got pissed at me. My girlfriend said he looked mad. I said, "oh so what" She said, "yeah but I have to go there." I told her she should educate herself about the Big Book and A.A. But she said, "I don't give a fuck about the history or that Bill guy, I just need some support." I told her there was other things to try also, but I could see she was digging being able to yak and get attention. Oh well. She just got out of the psyche ward yesterday so I am not going to bug her about it. But I do wish she would listen. Hmm, I wonder if that guy will check out your site. I doubt it. He had like 30 years in. I guess I made a bit of an asshole out of myself in her eyes and his. But big deal. I have been through the A.A. grinder and back and just couldn't listen to that shit and not say anything. Haha. Spiritual Awakening my ass. Thanks though Orange, maybe one day I will go and be able to put my words into cohesive thoughts and get kicked out but I didn't want to discourage the guy who only had one day in. I wish I could have offered him some support. Man, hearing those steps made my blood boil. They had pamphlets, "What Bill W. has to say" for God sake. I wanted to say he isn't any founder he just copied that Buchanism thing. Oh well. Haha As you can tell I have read a great deal of your site. Thanks for the input, Orange.
The thing is, as you know Orange, that so many different institutions refer to A.A. My friend has a great plan at work, where they assessed her and are going to do all this stuff for her then send her to A.A. She said she went to a big book meeting the other day and it was "To The Wives" and she really got upset. So she is going to try and avoid big book meetings and step meetings. The thing is, since she got herself into this jackpot she has to attend A.A. I don't think she is enjoying it. But has to cover her butt for work. Oh well.

Congratulations
The little devils have just announced that your presence in their Hell is intolerable, and they wish to see no more of you.

Hey this is a cool forum!
Orange you're an institution in and of yourself!! In the future the great great grandchildren of the world will talk about a silly movement for sots that once tried to take over the world... how all these alternative programs chugged along for 10-20 years trying to change peoples minds .......and then somewhere out of the blue came this seering light ...shining for all the world to see...and, they called it "ORANGE"!
